Pocket Gamer's best mobile games of the year 2016 - Sam's top 5 Every year a boatload of games comes out on the App Store, and millions of us download and delete Apps without hesitation. So this list celebrates the few apps that have engraved themselves on my phone and my heart.

I always will prefer games that require or encourage skill over pay to win. I believe that getting the most out of a game shouldn’t depend on how much money you sink in.

This doesn’t mean that freemium games are bad, I still play them, but without any extra purchases. So with no further waffling, here are my top 5 in no order.

Hungry Shark World

Ironically, I start off the list with a game that has in-app purchases. It’s only a little hypocritical, thats because there is nothing in the game that can’t be achieved without just playing.

Why mobile games are the best: Innovation Though I started contributing to PG yonks ago, I’ve only quite recently started up again after a period of doing other freelance writery bits and bobs. A spell during which I didn’t exactly fall out of love with gaming, but certainly had a bit of a barney with it, speaking to it only occasionally when I wanted it to pass the salt or go to the bank for me.

I don’t know if age, lack of time, or over-familiarity was to blame, but I found that console gaming had lost its sparkle. I’ve rarely been the sort to complete games anyway, but I realised I was barely touching most of the new ones I bought. If they didn’t grab me straight away, I was off to the next thing. And let’s be clear here: most games didn’t grab me straight away.

Free from having to write about them for money every day, my mobile gaming time also lessened, to the point where it just became another benchmarking tool for the mobile phones I was reviewing for tech websites.

Pocket Gamer's best mobile games of 2016 - Glen's top 5 2016 was a hell of a year for mobile games. Pokemon GO was so intensely popular it broke the internet, Clash Royale proved that core games can both make money and reach a massive audience on mobile, and flipping Super Mario is now playable on your iPhone for flip’s sake!

As a result, picking just five mobile games this year proved incredibly difficult, so I had to decide on a plan of attack to help me select the special games that would nestle snugly on my list.

But before we begin, then, here’s my disclaimer: this is not a definitive list of the best mobile games which launched in 2016.

These are the games that I had the most fun with, and revisited countless times for just one more go. In their own way they all blew me away.

So without further ado, here’s a bunch of games you should check out in case you missed them in 2016. You won’t regret it.
