Forget consoles - mobile's where all the innovation will be in 2017 What is it that I love about mobile games? It’s sort of hard to pin down. It’s a combination of factors that, in my pretty humble opinion, blend together to make mobile the most exciting field in gaming right now.

There’s a breathtaking array of different styles of game on mobile. From simple one-finger tappers to more complex, manipulable experiences. But the very best games all have one thing in common – they wouldn’t work as well on any other device.

It’s not just about controls either, although that’s part of it. It’s about play length, the style of the experience, and how well the finest games fit onto that device that fits snugly in your pocket.

Make Room

Think of it this way – we’ve got games like The Room, which make the most of the inputs available to them. On anything else they’d feel clunky, but on a touchscreen there’s an instant familiarity to them.

Pocket Gamer's best mobile games of the year 2016 - Harry's top 5 2016 has been a pretty impressive year for mobile gaming. News-wise it might even have been the biggest year since the iPhone first came out, but that shouldn’t detract from the amazing games that came out this year.

It was pretty hard narrowing this down to five, but I think I got there in the end. In that I demonstrably got there in the end, because there are only five games on this list. I’d have got in trouble if there weren’t.

These might not be the best games that came out this year, but they’re my favourites, and in the long run I’m pretty sure that’s more important than just saying stuff was good because the internet said it was good.

Pocket Gamer's best mobile games of the year 2016 - Mark's top 5 Hey. What’s up?

So, this is my last month at Pocket Gamer. I’ve been here since 2010 and have had lots of titles – news editor, features editor, deputy editor, editor, editor at large. I’ve said editor so many times that the word feels funny in my mouth.

Boy, has the industry changed in that time. When I started, the iPhone was just finding its feet. The App Store had been open for about two years and everybody was experimenting with new ways to play.

We started to see games like Fruit Ninja and Flight Control, that really took advantage of the iPhone’s giant touchscreen. And games that toyed with location, and the accelerometer, and the camera, and simple – but elegant – games you could play with one hand while riding the subway.

Limitless, creative, and quirky - 5 reasons why indie games rule on mobile A bunch of you may disagree with me here, but I love indie games. No matter whether it’s on mobile, PC, or console, indie games are totally boss in my opinion.

But you know the drill, I can’t exactly state this and not give my reasons why – so keep on reading.

Creativity

Indie games come in all shapes and sizes. Seriously, just look at Thomas Was Alone: a game about helping a bunch of coloured shapes work together to complete a bunch of platforming levels.

But it carries serious emotional heft, thanks to the stellar work of narrator Danny Wallace who spins a sad yarn about their true motivations.

This developer could make a story about a watermelon, lead me on a journey with it rolling across level after level, and make me shed tears at the end of it as it’s eaten by a bunch of hungry people.

Pocket Gamer's best mobile games of the year 2016 - Christian's top 5 It can be overwhelming to keep up with mobile gaming, for better or worse.

A steady stream of interesting intriguing releases, from exciting debuts by new developers to those out-of-the-blue ports no one is ever expecting, but one can only play and follow so many games.

But then there are those special games, the ones that stick in your mind even as the months pass and new games come and go. 2016 was a great year for mobile games, but these five are the ones that became my favourites of the year, in no particular order.

Sorcery 4

Inkle’s saga innovated the digital gamebook back in 2013, and each subsequent entry has only evolved and expanded upon that formula.
